Solving Wind Flows at Pedestrian Bridges

Prev Next
  • The Challenge

In many cities pedestrian overpass bridges have become part of the local architecture to provide walkable environments. This is particularly the case in cold climates where the bridge allows comfortable conditions as pedestrians pass internally from building to building. Unfortunately these bridges cause local increases in wind speed.

RWDI’s understanding of wind flows around structures allows us to develop various solutions to the problem.

  • The Solution

The solution to undesirable wind flows at pedestrian bridges encompasses two approaches:

    • Reduce the local windspeeds by obstructing the wind through the use of landscaping
    • Redirect the wind away from the pedestrian level through the use of a canopy

In concert with the project architect, RWDI modifies the details of these solutions and tests them in our wind tunnel to produce a comfortable pedestrian wind environment.
