    Early involvement

    RWDI’s long history of working in northern climates was utilized in a designer/community charrette in Nunavut to advance the design of a planned community education centre.
    Local elders, the design team, and community members at large were invited to consider options.

    Cost savings for snow removal: Recommended building orientation to reduce snow-clearing costs.

    Saving energy costs:
    Recommended techniques for reducing cold wind infiltration that would add to energy costs.

    Reducing risk:

    • Recommended that the building be raised to reduce snow accumulations around the building. 
    • Recommended exit and entrance locations so that snowdrifts would not affect access and egress. 
    • Recommended locations for exhaust vents to increase distance from vehicle fumes.
