Overview
Latvia's national library, the Castle of Light, is an important new public building.
Its mountain-like shape, however, offered some challenges to the design team in light of the severe winter climate in Riga. -
Services
- Wind pressures on cladding
- Snow and ice accumulation for sloped roofs as well as development of mitigation concepts
- Developing improved snow collection barrier and drainage gutters
- Wind comfort
-
Benefits
Effects on design: Appropriate wind loading criteria for design of the building’s cladding was determined. Recommendations for a snow collection gutter were made to lessen the chance of sliding snow and melt water on sloped surfaces.
Reducing risk: Design concepts were created and tested for an impact-absorbing barrier to limit sliding snow and ice along path of gutter.
