  • Carbon Neutral City

Masdar City is the most ambitious sustainable development in the world today – it will be the world's first carbon-neutral, zero waste city – fully powered by renewable energy.

RWDI reviewed the Masdar City master plan and formed very detailed Basis of Design guidelines for all future building designs.  Elements considered were wind and thermal comfort; shading, daylighting and energy creation; air quality; noise and vibration; ventilation and dust impact.

Masdar City energy design guidelines: RWDI developed energy design guidelines to provide a framework for designing energy efficient buildings in Masdar City to support the City’s goals of deriving 100 % of its energy requirements from renewable sources.

A holistic approach to designing for comfort: RWDI has reviewed the master plan to offer recommendations and strategies to enhance the plan with regards to overall comfort, which needs to holistically consider many aspects: wind and thermal comfort; visual comfort; air quality; noise and vibration.

Emissions in Masdar City are 96% less than a typical urban setting:  RWDI carried out analyses to describe and quantify Masdar City’s achievement in air quality as compared to a typical urban environment.

Making summers shorter: Masdar City has been designed to enhance thermal comfort, and thus extends the time during the year that a person is comfortable outdoors.  In the hot environment of the UAE, summers will appear shorter allowing residents to enjoy the outdoors longer.

Masdar City is built for the climate of tomorrow: RWDI predicted climate change for the Masdar City region so that its impact could be taken into account during the City’s design.

Working with nature to reduce our footprints on earth: RWDI provided guidance on using passive means to improve thermal comfort, as well as reduce energy consumption.
