Optimizing Design and Safety
Sometimes a structure can amaze its users merely by offering an outstanding view. The Grand Canyon Skywalk is the first lookout at the canyon to actually allow viewers to be above the canyon itself. Its glass floors, contained in a steel frame, allow an awe inspiring downward vantage point.

Services
- Analysis of wind stability.
- Analysis of pedestrian-induced vibration affecting the deck’s stability.
- Design and commissioning of damping systems housed in the box beams.
-
Benefits
Reducing risk: By adding a three unit damping system to the structure, the walkway has the required stability to mitigate potential pedestrian induced motions and improve user comfort.
Effects on design: Initial analysis of the structure’s stability for wind and pedestrian induced vibration called for supplementary damping option. Optimum viewing was realized through Motioneering’s custom dampers that allowed shallow box beams to be used and hence an ideal glass floor configuration.
