  • Overview

    Assisting with a unique design

We're honored to be part of this landmark project that is the world's largest domed structure with the world's largest column-free interior and with the world's largest video screen suspended from the roof.

RWDI pulled out all of the stops for this precedent setting structure that had multiple wind environments created by the retractable roof and the retractable glass walls at each end.

  • Services

    Wind Engineering

    • Overall structural wind loading on roof in various configurations including open and closed end doors.
    • Cladding wind loading for exterior walls, suspended scoreboard and glass end doors.
    • Wind drag study of retractable roof panels traveling on sloped tracks.

    Wind + Thermal Comfort

    • Wind comfort studies for the environment outside the stadium.
    • Effects of the wind on field's athletes and the seating area's spectators when end doors open.
    • Impact on spectator comfort when larger super bowl seating configuration in place.
  • Benefits

Effects on design: Design parameters were provided for optimizing wind impacts on the roof, seating areas, scoreboard, and areas outside the stadium.

Saving money: Estimated savings of 10 to 15 % were realized for the costs of structural steel.  Studies of roof and wall opening combinations further reduced structural material costs by avoiding problematic uplift loads.

Reducing risk: Roof operational protocols were produced from RWDI’s studies of various configurations of roof closure and end walls opened.  Roof uplift in one configuration was flagged and became part of the specifications for safe roof operation.
