Designing Natural Ventilation
"In its simplest form, natural ventilation is as simple as opening a window or door; it permits some form of air exchange with the outdoors. At the other end of the spectrum, natural ventilation implies an engineered balance of driving forces and pressure losses to move air through a building at predictable minimum flow rates, to provide adequate ventilation for air quality, for thermal comfort and to manage heat loads.

Dallas Cowboys' new stadium designed to weather the storm
Although the new Arlington stadium that will be the Cowboys' home is being built to withstand 115-mph winds, team officials talked with insurance company representatives last week for reassurances. Construction manager Jack Hill said they concluded that the thicker, denser fabric that will be installed on the retractable sections of the Cowboys' roof would be less susceptible to wind damage than the material on Reliant's roof.

Taipei 101 Damper moves during 2008 earthquake
On May 12, 2008, the devastating Sichuan earthquake hit most of China and many nearby countries including Taiwan. The Taipei 101 tower in Taiwan, for which both RWDI and Motioneering provided services, was one important building that felt the tremors of the earthquake.

John Kilpatrick has been awarded the 2008 ASCE State-of-the-Art of Civil Engineering Award. The award is presented to the researcher(s) that review and interpret the state-of-the-art, for the benefit of their colleagues, in a manner, which should expand the science and art of civil engineering.

Building Motion and Green Dampers Seminar
A timely decision by UAE Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to include international green building principles to the Emirates, ushered a new era in the green building movement in this region. The Emirates Green Building Council (EGBC) has also been formed to promote the principles of green building in the UAE. The basic objectives of sustainability are to reduce consumption of non-renewable resources, minimise waste and create healthy, productive environments.

MUMBAI: Mumbai will soon boast of the first green residential building in India. IGBC (Indian Green Building Council), which is part of CII (Confederation of Indian Industry), said last week that Shree Ram Urban Infrastructure Limited (SRUIL) is building 'Palais Royale' at Worli.

Michael Soligo is the New President of RWDI
Formerly RWDI’s Vice President and General Manager of the Wind and Microclimate Group, Michael joined the company in 1988 and became a Principal of the firm in 1994. For several years, he served as Vice President, Marketing, where he was responsible for leading the firm’s business development efforts.
