Gingerbread House Competition

 2005

On December 22, 2005, the RWDI Group of Companies in Guelph, Ontario held a Gingerbread House Competition. Once word was out that our Model Shop was in the competition, the competition was raised to a new level of creativity. The only criteria was that the house must be edible, and many teams were quite creative in using edible products for everything but the base.

Many of the entries were donated to local charities, organized and delivered by RWDI Group employees. Many thanks to all of those who helped to make this possible.

1st Place

Wind Tunnel 3 was commissioned by the Wind Tunnel 1 and Wind Tunnel 2 team. This construction includes three fans, an upwind profile, a turn table, a control room with technicians, and a gingerbread model complete with taps.

Wind Tunnel 3 was donated to a retirement home.

2nd Place

The dream team managed to get upset by the Cinderella Story of Wind Tunnel 3. However, the Model Shop team managed to construct a 1:500 scale replica of the Taipei 101 (pictured here with the actual wind tunnel model). Kris Kringle himself QAed the model, which only enforces that this submission has clout.

Taipei 101 was donated to a retirement home.

3rd Place (tie)

Our Exhaust Re-entrainment team commissioned The Gingerbread C.U.P., complete with a ... asualty-cay ... (pig latin if you really need to know). Nowhere in the world will you find a more creative use of cotton candy. We are sure you agree that the cotton candy (as shown in the image to the right) make the emissions look quite real.

The Gingerbread C.U.P. was donated to Norfolk Manor Retirement Home.

3rd Place (tie)

Less known for baking and better known for their creativity, the Corporate Marketing team created Paradise Lost to lighten the load of the devastating 2005 hurricane season. This gingerbread condo lost its roof and left the inhabitants floating out to sea with sharks on their heels. For a reminder, there was a sign stating, "Next time, get it wind tunnel tested by RWDI."

Paradise Lost was donated to Hopewell Children's Homes in Elmira.

Honourable Mention

The Ginger Bridge entry from our Structural team is yet another ambitious project with its bridge tower approaching the height of the 2nd place entry. The heavy bridge decks are held up by licorice cables and structural integrity.

This project was not donated as King Kong's mid-night snack (aka gingerbread man) destroyed a few cables, thus making the bridge unsuitable for transport.

Honourable Mention

Business Operations' "Forecast Glen" related the story of the three pigs in an edible format. In essence, if you want your edible house to stand up to strong winds, do not use Shredded Wheat biscuits or breadsticks—use wafer cookies instead.

Forecast Glen was donated to Marianne's Place.

Honourable Mention

In a world where anything is possible, Motioneering must be working on their next service offering, which is demonstrated clearly in their Taipei 101 entry. This damping system is able to withstand forces from King Kong and Queen Ginger alike.

Honourable Mention

Santa's own Human Resources department outshines all others. With under a month to build, wrap and prepare for delivery billions of quality toys, there has never been a strike or a toy delivered to the wrong house.

The HR Pole was donated to Michael's House.
