Falling Ice and Snow from High Rise Buildings / Structures

taped off sidewalk with fallen ice and snowInnovative architectural design advancements in building practices and materials, are producing unexpected or complex issues relating to the accumulation and control of winter precipitation on buildings. Thus, an increased awareness of the effects of snow, ice, freezing rain and meltwater accumulation on buildings is required.

RWDI's Falling Ice and Snow services will help designers with the identification and mitigation of potential issues in order to reduce the associated risks, while working to minimize aesthetic impact and added cost. RWDI's experience with snow and ice accumulation in cold climates of the world began in 1972 and includes significant experience in studying the interaction of snow on 100's of the worlds most advanced urban structures. Perhaps the firm's most important tool is the 25 years of experience observing and recording snow accumulation data in the real life laboratory of North America's Northern regions.

RWDI provides the following services with regards to Falling Ice and Snow on buildings and structures:

Falling Ice and Snow Consultation

Using historical meteorological data, past experience and engineering judgement, to review design drawings and provide consultation to in order to:

  • predict the potential for snow and ice to accumulate on the proposed structure
  • assess the potential of snow / ice to slide, fall or be blown from the structure
  • advise if further analysis is beneficial

Falling Ice and Snow Assessment

The Falling Ice and Snow Assessment provides the same results as the Falling Ice and Snow Consultation (above) as well as:

  • mitigation concepts that could reduce the occurrence of snow / ice related concerns for situations where potentially hazardous situations could occur
  • a written report

Falling Ice and Snow Testing

The testing of specific building details through a physical model in a cold room test facility.

Litigation Support

Through decades of experience RWDI Microclimate Specialists have gained recognition as experts in the field of wind, snow and ice issues. We have written many papers and conducted numerous studies on the subject of snow. They have appeared as expert witnesses in litigation cases and mediation related to highway accidents, roof collapses and snow accumulation issues.
