Bridge 3D Force Balance Model Study

RWDI proposes this type of study to enhance the Sectional Model Studies. Sectional Model Studies provide 2D information that may not be sufficient to address loads for wind directions that are skewed from the bridge’s main axis. By way of measuring mean loading effects on rigid models of selected sections of the bridge together with the remainder of the bridge, and in some cases its surroundings, for various wind directions, 3D information for static force and moment coefficient could be obtained. Then a 3D Buffeting Analysis will be carried out and refined wind loads obtained.

For bridges under construction or curved deck configurations, the highest wind loads may be induced by a range of wind directions. The main source of these loads is in the additional drag on the exposed crossbeams and bracing. The best tool to overcome such a shortcoming would be the Aeroelastic Model Study; however, in cases of projects with time and budgetary restrictions, Aeroelastic Model Studies may not be viable. The 3D Force Balance Model Study then could a valuable compromise to improve the theoretical wind load estimates.
