Smoke Control / Smoke Management Consulting

Atrium Smoke Management Simulation with CFDIf the people trying to evacuate a building become enveloped by smoke, they can breathe in harmful toxins, and / or can become disoriented and unable to exit.  Building to code does work in some situations; however, reliance on code might result in a very expensive or an insufficient smoke management system.

Spaces that typically require consulting services:

  • Atria / lobby
  • Large spaces (like convention centers, sport facilities / arenas / stadiums, airport terminals, theaters / theatres, auditoriums, museums, art galleries)
  • Underground spaces (like subways, tunnels, parking)

SERVICES

Peer Review / Consultation

RWDI's experience in designing over 30 building smoke management systems is invaluable for owners and code officials who wish to have a second opinion on a smoke management system's design. RWDI will review a design and offer expert opinion on the ability of the system to meet its objectives. RWDI will employ tools that provide relevant feedback on the performance of the system.

Building Design Review

RWDI's experts review information and provide recommendations to anticipate and avoid potential problems.  Early in the building design process provides clients with the greatest value.

Detailed Assessment / Consultation

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling / testing is used to perform smoke migration analysis to aid designers in evaluating emergency ventilation strategies for smoke control.
